In recent years, trail running in San Diego has taken off due to the miles and miles or beautiful single track blazing through the county’s hillsides becoming more accessible. Mission Trails, Mount Laguna, Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, Rancho Los Penasquitos, Iron Mountain and the San Elijo Hills are examples of great trail running locations that all offer loads of miles for exploring. Whether you want big climbs, long weaving single track, or something close to home you can find it in the diversity of trails here in San Diego County.

If you are new to trail running you might want to consider joining a club. Some clubs are San Diego Dirt Devils, sdtrailrunning.blogspot.org, and there are also runs hosted through Lululemon athleta and Movin’ Shoes. All trail running clubs are open to any level of experience, and they are a great way to make new running friends!
With trail running you may find that you get a more challenging workout than running on the road. The hills are steeper, every step is a controlled and focused effort, and there are often obstacles you have to get over or around. Overall the terrain is just tougher, meaning more calories are burnt in an hour running on trails than on the road. Plus being out in nature is a great way to escape the craziness of city life for a little while!
